first place prize and plaques, paying down at least ten places. In addition to
all the cash awards and plaques anglers will be treated to a variety of sponsors
prizes and gifts given at each tournament courtesy of the WPA and its sponsors
like Pittsburgh Brewing, Woodlands World, Shamano, Lowrance, Red Bull, Berkley,
Reef Runner, Stinger Spoons, Timber Wolf Tobacco, Skeeter Boats, and many
others just to name a few.
Contestants can arrive as early as
5:30 a.m. to have their boat safety inspected and then spend time sharing or not
sharing tournament strategies while enjoying hot coffee and snacks with the
other contestants. All the tournaments, weather permitting, are kicked off at
7 a.m. following any announcements and the National Anthem. Boats are then
launched in order of their registration for the 8 hour event. All boats must be
back in line-of-sight by 3 p.m. for check in.
Anglers will then assemble back at
the WPA official weigh-in trailer with the days catch. All anglers are
encouraged to partake in the free food and drinks following each tournament
while each teams catch is weighed and recorded. While each team waits to see
how well they place, boat numbers are drawn for both owners and riders for a
variety of sponsor’s gifts given away at every event.
The WPA will offer Bass and Walleye
anglers in the region the opportunity to fish in any of five new state
tournament trails this year. A minimum of three tournaments will be held for
anglers in PA, WV, MD, OH, and NY in 2004 with a chance to qualify for the two
day Championship to be held in October sponsored by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort
and Woodlands World Outdoors Store.
By competing in at least three
tournaments, Bass and Walleye anglers will have a chance at thousands of dollars
in prize money, Championship trophies, team jackets, and a pair of the coveted
WPA Championship rings.
Top anglers from the 5 states will
earn the right to compete in the Western Pennsylvania Anglers Championship
Tournament. This 2 day event, hosted by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and
Woodlands World will be held October 2nd & 3rd . Anglers
will fish day 1 for a qualifying spot on day 2, with a weigh-in ceremony to be
held in front of the Woodlands World Store. Winning teams will compete for
thousands in cash & awards accumulated over the season. The top Bass and
Walleye teams from each state will receive special awards. The Championship
teams will be presented with checks, plaques, jackets and the WPA Championship
Rings. Walleye anglers will also receive an automatic spot at the National
Championships in 2005.
Walleye anglers take special note
that the Western PA Anglers was one of the original qualifying organizations for
the Cabela’s National Team Walleye Championships. Walleye anglers finishing
high enough in the WPA will earn the right to represent the WPA at the National
Team Championship in 2005. This nationally televised event pits anglers from
across the United States and Canada all competing for over $125,000 in cash and
prizes as well as 2 new Ranger boats.
The WPA has had several teams
represented in the top 20 since the first championship held in 2002. Finishes
like these are testament to the quality of anglers we have in this region said
WPA Director David Show. The WPA is interested in providing an opportunity for
the average angler to fish in a professional grade tournament that they thought
they couldn’t afford or do well in. This is a chance to fish in a well run
tournament, spend time with other anglers, share stories and maybe pick up some
new techniques. Many fishermen have thought about fishing in a tournament but
never thought they could or never took that next step, now they can and have a
good time doing it said Show. Many of us have fished in tournaments across the
country and done well. The WPA wants to show the country just what our region
has to offer and just how good our fishermen are in this area. Any interested

Pymatuning first stop on the Western Pennsylvania Anglers
five state tournament trail
The Western PA Anglers kicked off their new five state Bass & Walleye tournament
trail April 17th at Pymatuning Lake. As the water temperature increased so did
the fishing action according to WPA director David Show.
Bass anglers had good results with hundreds of large & small mouth bass being
brought to the scale. The Butler bass team of Ernie and Ken Pate brought a five
fish limit to the scale that weighed over 15 lbs. The team of Jim Lunsford of
Washington, PA and Ed Balta of N. Huntingdon, PA from took 2nd place honors with
the help of their lunker bass that weighed over 5.5 lbs.
Walleye anglers had a tougher bite, but fishing steadily improved as the water
warmed. First place in the walleye division went to the team of John Jackson and
Mike Maley of Louisville, OH with a weight of 10.47 lbs. followed in second by
Uniontown area walleye anglers Dave Show and Mike Kalafut who also netted the
event’s big fish that weighed nearly 4 lbs. The Uniontown team of Regis Provance
and Jim Dice also finished 3rd in the event.
The Western Reserve also held a walleye tournament on Sunday the 18th and the
walleye catch continued to improve with a sunny day in the upper 70s. The
Uniontown team of Show and Kalafut continued to do well with a 7th place finish
again taking big fish honors with a nearly 5 lb walleye. According to Show the
fishing should be very good over the next few weeks. As the water has warmed and
the walleye progress through the spawning they should start to feed more
aggressively and that spells good fishing.
The next Western Pennsylvania Anglers tournament will be held April 24th on
Tygart Lake in WV followed by Mosquito Lake in OH on May 1st. Anyone wishing
information on any of the upcoming WPA tournaments can call Dave Show at

Cabela’s
looks north to Bays de Noc for 2004 National Team Championship
SIDNEY, Neb. – It’s official – walleye anglers qualified for the 2004 Cabela’s
National Team Championship can put Escanaba, Michigan, on their summer travel
plans. The 3rd annual Cabela’s National Team Championship will be held in Delta
County on Bays de Noc, near Escanaba and Gladstone, on June 11-12.
“With 30,000+ acres of fishable water and a legendary walleye bite, Bays de Noc
is the premier site for the 2004 National Team Championship,” said Eric Banks,
external relations coordinator for Cabela’s. “Qualifying teams will find
cooperative fish, friendly people and an atmosphere like no other in Delta
County. Cabela’s 2004 National Team Championship is destined to be the best
yet.” The Delta County Chamber of Commerce, U.P. State Fairgrounds, Bays de Noc
Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Development Districts of
Escanaba and Gladstone will host the event.
“The entire community is very enthusiastic about hosting Cabela’s National Team
Championship,” said Vickie Micheau, executive director of the Delta County
Chamber of Commerce. “With nearly 200 miles of freshwater shoreline, anglers are
guaranteed a great experience learning the secrets of Little Bays de Noc. This
time of year you can expect the walleye to be hungry and feisty.” The community
will also host Destination Delta tours, lumberjack shows and other activities
for anglers and their families and fans. “The community will roll out the red
carpet and do everything we can to provide a positive experience,” said Jalene
Polkey, local tournament coordinator and chairperson of the Delta Chamber of
Commerce.
Building on the incredible success of previous tournaments, the 2004 National
Team Championship partners 44 walleye tournaments, circuits and clubs across the
nation in a true national championship format. “Our 2003 event was an
overwhelming success,” said Banks. “Anglers and fans alike agree the National
Team Championship is the premier event for walleye team anglers.” The 2004
tournament will gather anglers from 30 states to compete for cash, value-added
prizes and the chance to be named National Champions.

Western PA Anglers
place high in Cabela's National Team Championship.
Milford Lake near Junction City Kansas was the location of the 2003 National
Team Walleye Championship hosted by Cabela’s. June 6th & 7th over 250 teams of
walleye anglers from across the nation and Canada participated in the 2-day
event in hopes of taking home a share of the $125,000.00 cash prize as well as a
new Ranger boat.
Teams throughout last year competed in sanctioned events to gain a qualifying
spot at the National Championship. Only anglers qualifying by winning or placing
high enough in participating events were eligible to participate. Locally,
anglers from the Western Pennsylvania Anglers, Yough Walleye Association, KAWA
and Western Reserve Walleye Association earned the chance to compete in this
year’s event.
David Show, Director of the Western Pennsylvania Anglers and his partner Mike
Kalafut finished in 17th place earning them the title of top finishers from
Pennsylvania as well as securing a position as a Cabela’s Top 25 All American
Walleye Team. The team was presented with a check, marble plaque from Cabela’s,
and will be given engraved gold rings signifying their seat as All American
Walleye Anglers for 2003.
David, from Hopwood, PA and his partner Mike of Uniontown who have participated
in events across the country stated this was one of the largest and most
professional events the have ever participated in. The staff from Cabela’s along
with folks around Junction City did an outstanding job with the event.
“We were feeling pretty good at the end of the first day when we hit the scales
with a limit, especially when some of the Cabela’s staff told me we were only
one of a hand full of teams who came in with one for the day” stated Dave. “I
had a feeling about a cove just outside the launch. We hadn’t prefished it at
all but I just had a feeling we would find fish and sure enough just a few
minutes into the tournament we had a 6 lb. eye in the boat. Much like Yough Lake
we did well on light jigs and lindy rigs and the technique worked well enough to
keep us in the top 20 for day 2”. “I would have to say the quality of angler in
this event is as good or better than any pro circuit I know and we in this area
should be especially proud of the anglers in this area, they are as good as it
gets.”
A special thanks goes to several local businesses including Woodlands Outdoors,
Pittsburgh Brewing, Timber Wolf Chewing Tobacco, Mercy Hospital, Nicklow’s Bait,
and others for contributing to the team’s efforts this year in getting them to
the Championship.
Other anglers from the area who did well were Joe Daveler and Bob Fisher, who
place 20th in the event. Also from the Yough Walleye Association and The WPA
were the team of Paul Santucci and Ray Zimmerman who lead for big fish going
into day 2 with a lunker over 9 lbs.
Cabela’s will nationally televise the event at a date and channel to be
announced.
